Major in Hispanic Studies
The Hispanic Studies program in the department of World Languages and Cultures (WLC) at the University of Tennessee develops Spanish language proficiency as it fosters critical thinking through literary, cinematic, and linguistic analysis. Students can earn a B.A. in WLC with a concentration in Hispanic Studies or Language and World Business/Hispanic Studies.
The honors concentration consists of 30 hours of Spanish courses numbered above 300. Students must have at least 12 hours of honors courses in Spanish at the 400-level, including honors-by-contract and/or independent studies with an honors-by-contract component. In order for an honors-by-contract course to fulfill the honors requirement, students should receive a final grade of B+ or better.
At least 3 hours of one of the following must be completed: a) a study abroad experience in a Spanish-speaking country or b) a Spanish-related service learning class (e.g., SPAN 494 taken as an independent study)> These hours may not be used to fulfill the 12-hour honors requirement.
Overall GPA of at least 3.25 and a 3.5 GPA in Spanish courses are required for both admission into and completion of the honors concentration.
A Hispanic Studies major can be an advantage in gaining employment in fields such as teaching, translation, journalism, international business or law, foreign service, and the travel industry.
