Japan is one of the world’s largest economies and among its most influential cultural forces. Its reach extends from literature, film, and animation to robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced manufacturing—making Japan a vital partner in fields that span the humanities, the sciences, and global industry.

The Japanese program in the Department of World Languages and Cultures offers students advanced language proficiency, cultural fluency, and the analytical skills needed to work across cultures in academic, business, and public-sector settings. Students also benefit from the UT Japan Center, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, which serves as a hub for interdisciplinary research, education, and engagement connecting Tennessee and Japan.
