Asian Studies
The Asian Studies program at the University of Tennessee provides students the opportunity for intensive study of pre-modern and modern Asian civilizations, from the Middle East to Japan and everything in between.
The Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies combines work in anthropology, art history, geography, history, language, literature, political science, and/or religious studies. Majors select one of five concentrations: China, the Islamic World, Japan, South and Southeast Asia, or the general Asian Studies option with no specific geographic focus. Courses for this program are offered by several departments: Anthropology, Art, Geography, History, Political Science, Religious Studies, and World Languages and Cultures, as well as occasional special topics courses in other areas.
The growing cultural and economic influence of Asia globally makes expertise in this area increasingly important. The Asian Studies program can lead to government careers in international relations, foreign service, immigration and naturalization service, and the United Nations, as well as careers in the private sector. Asian Studies majors may pursue advanced degrees to hone their language skills, teach at the college or university level, practice law, etc.
