The Hispanic Studies Program now offers language certificates for students who wish to take classes beyond their language requirement to develop and demonstrate communicative world language skills and intercultural competence but are unable to fit in a full Hispanic Studies minor. Employers in business, education, healthcare, and technology increasingly realize the advantages of world language skills. Earning these certificates will be a clear credential on their transcript to prove their world language skills.

Students seeking admission to the Undergraduate Certificate must meet the admissions standards established by the Undergraduate Council. No grades below C are acceptable for students wishing to receive these certificates.

Conversational Spanish Certificate (9 credits)

Required courses: 6 hours

• Choose one:
  • SPAN 211 Intermediate Spanish I
  • SPAN 217 Honors: Intermediate Spanish I
• AND Choose one:
  • SPAN 212* Intermediate Spanish II
  • SPAN 218* Honors: Intermediate Spanish II
• OR take
  • SPAN 223* Intensive Intermediate Spanish

Required courses: 3 hours

• Choose 3 hours from the following list
  • SPAN 311* Language in Context I
  • SPAN 461 Special Topics (if offered in English)

• Up to 3 credit hours may be transfer coursework.
• At least 3 credit hours used to satisfy a certificate’s requirements must be unique to any other credential (certificate, minor, or major) earned by the student.

Advanced Spanish Certificate (12 credits)

• Complete 9 credit hours taking the following courses.
  • SPAN 212* Intermediate Spanish II
  • SPAN 218* Honors: Intermediate Spanish II

OR take

• SPAN 223* Intensive Intermediate Spanish
  • NOTE: If you take SPAN 223, 3 credit hours (out of 6) will count towards the advanced certificate

AND take the following two courses:
