JAPA 251 – Intermediate Japanese I (4 Credit Hours)

Satisfies General Education Requirement: (CC)
(RE) Prerequisite(s): 152 with grade of C or better.

JAPA 252 – Intermediate Japanese II (4 Credit Hours)

Satisfies General Education Requirement: (CC)
(RE) Prerequisite(s): 251.

JAPA 300 – Kanji for Japanese (3 Credit Hours)

Learn 200-250 Chinese characters (kanji)–their origin, readings, meanings, radicals, and stroke order. Enhance proficiency in both reading and writing Japanese by expanding vocabulary and learning recognition and memorization techniques. 

Language of instruction: English and Japanese

JAPA 313 – Premodern Japanese Culture (3 Credit Hours)

A survey of pre-1868 cultures that continue or have ceased in modern Japan on the global stage.

JAPA 314 – Food, Fiction, and Film in Modern Japan (3 Credit Hours)

Modern – literary and visual narratives through the lens of culinary and cultural history. Taught in English.

JAPA 321 – Japanese Popular Media (3 Credit Hours)

This course explores various genres of popular media in Japan, such as manga, anime, TV series, films, music, and games, and their impact on modern Japanese culture and reception in the world.

JAPA 351 – Advanced Japanese I (3 Credit Hours)

Includes conversation, drill, and composition practice with native speaker, as well as reading and translation.

(RE) Prerequisite(s): 252.

JAPA 352 – Advanced Japanese II (3 Credit Hours)

Includes conversation, drill, and composition practice with native speaker, as well as reading and translation.

(RE) Prerequisite(s): 351.

JAPA 365 – Japanese for Business (3 Credit Hours)

Japanese social management culture, and the global significance of economic and political developments in Japan. Commercial vocabulary, marketing, management, and other principles and business practices..

(RE) Prerequisite(s): 351 and 352 or equivalent.

JAPA 413 – Topics in Japanese Literature (3 Credit Hours)

In English with readings in Japanese for minors. Writing-emphasis course.

Repeatability: May be repeated. Maximum 15 hours.

JAPA 451 – Introduction to Classical Japanese (3 Credit Hours)

This course explores all major grammar forms used in classical Japanese, as well as archaic forms used in contemporary materials such as manga, anime, games, and music. (RE) Prerequisite(s): 352 or equivalent.

JAPA 452 – Reading in Modern Japanese Texts (3 Credit Hours)

(RE) Prerequisite(s): 352 or equivalent.

JAPA 490 – Japanese Internship (1-15 Credit Hours)

Career-related experiences in the United States or abroad.

Grading Restriction: Satisfactory/No Credit grading only.
Repeatability: May be repeated. Maximum 15 hours.
Registration Restriction(s): Japanese language and world business concentration.

JAPA 491 – Japanese Foreign Study (1-15 Credit Hours)
