Anthony Stott

Anthony Stott is a scholar of Japanese and comparative literary studies, specializing in the media, visual, and intellectual cultures of contemporary Japan. He is currently a Teaching Assistant Professor of Japan Studies in the Department of World Languages & Cultures at UT.

He received his joint PhD in East Asian Languages & Civilizations and Comparative Literature from the University of Chicago in June 2025. Before coming to UT, he taught at UMass Boston, Wellesley College, and UChicago. His peer-reviewed writing has appeared in Verge: Studies in Global Asias.

His research centrally explores two interrelated problems: (1) how theory and criticism contribute to the diverse aesthetic genres that underpin them, and (2) how attention to questions of media can enrich understandings of theory’s global histories and participation in the world. He is particularly interested in creating channels of communication between the underexplored theory and criticism of Japan’s recent past and current Euro-American critical debates, with an eye to reinvigorating these debates by deprovincializing their fundamental assumptions.

His work has been supported by grants like the Fulbright and Nippon Foundation fellowships.

At UT, he teaches courses on Japan’s literature, film and media, and popular culture from a comparative perspective. He also manages events and programming for the new UT Japan Center.

For the most up-to-date information on his research, teaching, and organizing, please consult his personal website.
