Brittany Murray

Brittany Murray is an Assistant Professor of French who specializes in twentieth and twenty-first century French culture. She received her PhD in French and Francophone Studies from Northwestern University and her BA from Vanderbilt University Research interests include gender, migration, and contemporary French literature and film. Her first book, co-edited with Diane Perpich, examined a French feminist movement that rose to prominence in the aughts. Her current project is a book about France in the 1970s, a decade of economic and political struggle matched by artistic creativity The project mines the past for insight into many issues that feel urgent in the present like migration policy, gender roles, unemployment, and urban space She recently published a portion of this research showing how authors coped with layoffs and uncertainty about the future through science fiction. In her next monograph project, she is planning to explore the tension between allegory and empathy in French intercultural cinema.
