Chinese Language Certificates
The Chinese Program now offers language certificates for students who wish to take classes beyond their language requirement to develop and demonstrate communicative world language skills and intercultural competence but are unable to fit in a full Chinese minor.
The Chinese Program now offers language certificates for students who wish to take classes beyond their language requirement to develop and demonstrate communicative world language skills and intercultural competence but are unable to fit in a full Chinese minor. Employers in business, education, healthcare, and technology increasingly realize the advantages of world language skills. Earning these certificates will be a clear credential on their transcript to prove their world language skills.
Students seeking admission to the Undergraduate Certificate must meet the admissions standards established by the Undergraduate Council. No grades below C are acceptable for students wishing to receive these certificates.
Conversational Chinese Certificate (11-12 credits)
Complete (8 credits):
- CHIN 231 – Intermediate Chinese I
- CHIN 232* – Intermediate Chinese II
Choose one course (3-4 credits)
- CHIN 300 – A Kaleidoscope of China
- CHIN 430 – Women in China
- CHIN 469 – Gender and Sexuality in Chinese Cinema
- CHIN 471* – Introduction to Chinese Linguistics
- CHIN 331* – Advanced Chinese I (4 credits)
- CHIN 332* – Advanced Chinese II (4 credits)
- CHIN 401* – Contemporary Chinese Studies I
- CHIN 402* – Contemporary Chinese Studies II
- CHIN 431 – Chinese Literature and Culture
- CHIN 432 – Advanced Reading and Composition
- CHIN 491 – Chinese Foreign Study (1-15 credits)
- CHIN 493 – Independent Study (1-15 credits)
- Up to 3 credit hours may be transfer coursework.
- At least 3 credit hours used to satisfy a certificate’s requirements must be unique to any other credential (certificate, minor, or major) earned by the student.
