French Language Certificates
The French Program now offers language certificates for students who wish to take classes beyond their language requirement to develop and demonstrate communicative world language skills and intercultural competence but are unable to fit in a full French minor.
The French Program now offers language certificates for students who wish to take classes beyond their language requirement to develop and demonstrate communicative world language skills and intercultural competence but are unable to fit in a full French minor. Employers in business, education, healthcare, and technology increasingly realize the advantages of world language skills. Earning these certificates will be a clear credential on their transcript to prove their world language skills.
Students seeking admission to the Undergraduate Certificate must meet the admissions standards established by the Undergraduate Council. No grades below C are acceptable for students wishing to receive these certificates.
Conversational French Certificate (9 credits)
Choose one:
- FREN 211 – Intermediate French I
- FREN 213 – Intermediate French I with Business Emphasis
- FREN 217 – Honors: Intermediate French I
AND
Choose one:
- FREN 212* – Intermediate French II
- FREN 214* – Intermediate French II with Business Emphasis 3
- FREN 216* – Intermediate French II with Health and Humanitarian Emphasis
- FREN 218* – Honors: Intermediate French II
OR take
- FREN 223* – Intensive Intermediate French (6 credits)
Choose one 3-credit hours from the following list:
- FREN 333* – Intermediate Composition and Grammar
- FREN 420 – French Cinema
- FREN 431* – Highlights of French Civilization (if offered in English)
- FREN 432 – Contemporary French Culture (if offered in English)
- FREN 450 – Special Topics in French and Francophone Literature (if offered in English
- FREN 455 – Special Topics in French and Francophone History and Culture (if offered in English)
- Up to 3 credit hours may be transfer coursework.
- At least 3 credit hours used to satisfy a certificate’s requirements must be unique to any other credential (certificate, minor, or major) earned by the student.

Advanced French Certificate (12 credits)
Complete 9 credit hours:
- Select one course:
- FREN 212* – Intermediate French II
- FREN 214* – Intermediate French II with Business Emphasis
- FREN 216* – Intermediate French II with Health and Humanitarian Emphasis
- FREN 218* – Honors: Intermediate French II
OR
- FREN 223* – Intensive Intermediate French
- NOTE: If you take FREN 223, 3 credit hours (out of 6) will count towards the advanced certificate.
- AND take the following two courses:
- FREN 333* – Intermediate Composition and Grammar
- FREN 334* – Intermediate Conversation and Phonetics
Complete 3 credit hours:
- Select one course from the following list:
- FREN 353* – Introduction to Literary Analysis in French
- FREN 405* – Language and Culture of Business in the Francophone World
- FREN 420 – French Cinema
- FREN 421 – Phonetics
- FREN 431* – Highlights of French Civilization (if offered in English)
- FREN 432 – Contemporary French Culture (if offered in English)
- FREN 450 – Special Topics in French and Francophone Literature (if offered in English)
