How do I clear course prerequisites?
Clearing Course Prerequisites from your Placement Exam
WLC courses have prerequisites that must be completed before enrolling. Unfortunately, placement exam scores are not (yet) automatically uploaded into Banner to allow for the prerequisite to clear. However, Dr. Canfield has the ability to do that for you!
If you will send an email to lrc@utk.edu or submit a ticket to the LRC Helpdesk, Dr. Canfield can verify your placement and remove the prerequisite block on your course so that you can enroll. Please allow about 72 hours for your request to be processed.
Can I take multiple placement exams?
Taking Multiple Placement Exams
As you will only receive departmental credit for one language if your score is high enough, we initially lock use down to one exam and encourage you to take the exam for the strongest language you took in high school. We are not at all opposed to you taking several different language placement exams, but we do want to stress that you will only receive departmental credit (if warranted) for one exam.
What do I need to do?
If you have additional exams that you would like to take, send an email to lrc@utk.edu or submit a ticket to the LRC Helpdesk.
What is a confirmation exam?
Departmental credit for WLC Placement Exams is awarded after confirmation of your online results via successful completion of the placement course or successful completion of a Confirmation Exam for those who qualify.
When are you open?
Our hours are listed in the right column (on laptop or desktop), or below (on smartphone).
Can I work at the LRC?
Thank you for your interest in working at the Language Resource Center! Please fill out the application form here so that we may advance your request to the leadership team. If you have any questions about the application or about the Language Resource Center, please feel free to contact us at lrc@utk.edu.
Can I watch LRC movies remotely?
Much of the LRC’s world media collection is now available on our PLEX server, which can be accessed for free via https://www.plex.tv and streaming devices, or for a small, one-time, in-app purchase for app access to our server on mobile devices.
If you are taking a language class and are interested, contact us at lrc@utk.edu. We will send you an invitation, which will ask you to confirm your friendship with us. This will give you access to our libraries.
If you have a movie that you’d like to see but don’t see it in the PLEX database, email us so that we can make sure to get it for you!
Why can’t I register for 112 in the Second Session of Summer Semester?
WLC courses have prerequisites that must be completed before enrolling. Unfortunately, taking 111 in the First Session of Summer Semester does not give you the ability to pass and get an override in time to take 112 in the Second Session of Summer Semester. However, the LRC can help! Email us at lrc@utk.edu and we can remove the prerequisite block on 112 for Summer Semester, allowing you to enroll in both 111 and 112.
Do you have interpreters and translators?
We suggest reaching out to the interpretation and translation services of the UT Institute for Public Service. They have a request for interpretation and translation services form to fill out on the bottom of the page, and they are likely your best bet to find the services you are looking for.
Is there a lost and found in the LRC?
Facilities Services delivers all personally identifiable items found in AMB (such as government-issued photo identification cards, cash, uncashed checks, and stored value cards such as VolCards) to the UT Police Department. All other items are delivered to the UT Warehouse at 2111 Stephenson Drive. If you send an email with your contact information and a description and picture if possible of what you have lost to lostandfound@utk.edu, they can determine if it has been turned in.
Why can’t I cancel my exam time in the Language Assessment Center today?
We have a 4-hour embargo on reservation additions and changes as a security measure, but you can email us at lrc@utk.edu to let us know, and we will cancel your reservation on this end.
I am taking a language class at another university. Can I take my tests in the LRC?
If you are a UTK student, you can use the Language Assessment Center to take language exams from other institutions where proctoring is required. You will need to make sure that Shaun Washington (czm841@utk.edu) receives any passwords that your instructor will require to access the exam, and you will need to reserve a spot in the Language Assessment Center for the time you need to take the exam. If your test will take longer than 1 hour, you will need to sign up for consecutive hours.
